The Riekerpolder is a polder in the municipality of Amsterdam, district of Nieuw-West (before 1921 municipality of Sloten), north of the Nieuwe Meer.
The Riekerpolder is a continuation of the Rietwijkerpolder and the Bovenwegse Sloterpolder (or Sloterbuitenpolder) and was created in 1636 when the area between the Sloterweg and the Nieuwe Meer was diked and drained with a polder mill, the Riekermolen. The polder is part of a peat meadow area that was part of the Hollands-Utrecht peat area.
The pastureland thus created remained intact for centuries. During the reclamation of the Haarlemmermeer (1849-1852), a part of the polder in the southwest was excavated for the Ringvaart of the Haarlemmermeerpolder, between where Badhoevedorp and the hamlet of Nieuwe Meer are now located.
The Sieger Park has been located along the Sloterweg since the 1930s. There are also allotments (‘Ons Buiten’), which have been established here since 1927, and there is the Sportpark Riekerhaven. The Sportpark Sloten, the (old) Bijenpark and the garden parks ‘Lisbon’, ‘Eigen Hof’ and VAT are also located in the Riekerpolder.
The villa is easily reached from the airport by bus (#369) to the Antwerpenbaan stop and then a leisurely 9-minute walk. The nearby tram stop (Laan V. Vlaanderen) is the same 9-minute walk for tram #2 directly to museum area (about 15 minutes) or to Central Station (about 30 minutes). If you plan to do a lot of traveling into different parts of Amsterdam, it is worth getting a GVB family pass and/or multiday pass.
